It's been nearly a quarter of a century since
Mickey Mantle last wore New York Yankee pinstripes, but the legend continues. In a
recent survey more than 100,000 baseball collectors voted "The Mick" the most
popular player ever - surpassing even Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, three other
legends who also played for baseball's most heralded franchise.
Mantle's 1952 Topps baseball card remains the
most coveted card of the postwar era. Since 1984, that card has taken off like a
Mantle tape-measure home run - increasing in price from $825 to $30,000 in 1993.
Mantle memorabilia has set the standard in
auctions, too. During Leland's "Heavy Hitters" auction Jan. 15, 1992, in
New York, Mantle's 1960 New York Yankee home jersey brought a record price for a jersey -
$111,100, topping the $71,500 paid for a Mantle 1967 road top sold during Leland's
"Glory Days" auction in July 1991. In addition to auction results, which
have been included, this book covers all sorts of memorabilia - from bobbing head dolls to
autographs, and everything in between - including the oddball items.
